We've got almond butter, cashew butter, cashew-macadamia butter...hot damn, where's the pine nut butter? Oops, spoke too soon.
Meanwhile, people have been getting crazy with hemp lately--hemp protein powder, hemp milk, hemp oil...and they should because hemp, besides providing many stimulating (and hilarity-inducing) recreational activities, packed full of protein, essential fatty acids, and even calcium and iron. Turn it into a butter and what do you have?
GREEN BUTTER!
The folks at Manitoba Harvest, however, have wrangled this verdant beasty into a strange but potentially very tasty nut butter, and a worthy addition to any nuthead's pantry.
Let's get it out of our systems: this stuff is green!
So yes, that gives you the oppurtunity to craft green eggs and ham, if you are like me and will put nut butter on eggs.
The texture is pretty standard for less-processed nut butter. It's slightly gritty, but not "sandy." Personally, I like the mild grit--it gives a hint of crunch when spread on toast, or a bit or contrast when drizzled on fruit.
But what's it taste like? Hemp. Seriously. If you've tried hemp rotein powder, or some brands of hemp milk, then you know what it tastes like. It does not taste like pot. For those who have not tasted hemp seeds, I will try and describe it.
Think of walnuts, rolled through fresh-cut grass, and sprinkled with flaxseed. In short, it's earthly, slightly sweet, slightly nutty, and a tad bitter. It's definitely a flavor that changes depending on what it is served with. Fruit and sweeter breads bring out the sweetness. Deeper grains bring out the savory. Straight out of the jar, it's a bit too earthy for me, but I love to put it on apples--it's a much different experience than the good ol' PB and apples!
I would be very curious to use hemp seed butter in a pasta sauce, or in a pesto. Heck, because I'm crazy, I've love to mix it into oatmeal and honey and top it with blueberries. It will never be my go-to nut butter because it is such a unique flavor, but I'm definitely curious to try it out more.
Hemp Seed Butter is an experience, a very, very healthy one. I can't compare Manitoba Harvest's hemp seed butter with any other, but I like this stuff.

This is awesome that you're reviewing it- Manitoba is where I live :D I tried this butter once and could NOT get into it, though. It tastes too earthy for me. I'll give it another shot on apples, though :) Good idea to use it in a pesto or pasta sauce; I bet that would work quite well.
wow, green nut butter!??!?!
You are right, I don't think I ave seen one blogger out there who says they hate nut butters. I am an admitted addict myself.
Great blog :)
The way you described it, it seems like a wheat grass juice and the difference is hemp is creamier. Which do you has more nutritional value, a hemp butter or virgin coconut oil?
