Kaia Foods and Paris Hilton do not share the same views on the Simple Life.
Sometimes, simplicity is best. I can't count how many times I've messed up a dish because I just had to keep complicating it. "Hmm, maybe a dash of tarragon...ooh, what about some marjoram?!"
Kaia Foods says it likes to keep things simple. The have only three products: sunflower seeds, granola, and fruit leathers. All are vegan and raw. What they don't mention, however, is that when you keep things simple, simple things get more interesting. With its simple approach, Kaia proves just how awesome a bit of sunflower seeds and curry powder can be.
Kaia's granola's come in three flavors: Cocoa Bliss, Dates & Spices, and Raisin Cinnamon. I sampled the Cocoa and Date flavors.
I'm picky with granola. A lot of them are super sweet and taste cloying. I have to say, Kaia's granola is some of the best I've ever had. If you don't like buckwheat, turn back now, as Kaia does not douse the groats in agave or maple syrup. In fact, while agave is used, the granola is not particularly sweet at all--a good thing in my book, since I eat my granola with Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, which has natural sweetness anyway.
As you can see, the nutritional stats are awesome.
There are a lot of textures going on in both--seeds and nuts are mixed with crunchy groats and chewy dried fruit. I like nuts more than fruit, so I might have preferred more nuts and less fruit, but overall, I was quite pleased.Keep in mind, a lot of that sugar comes from the raisins. Look at all of that iron, protein, and fiber! Buckwheat is a superior base to oats, in terms of nutritional punch.
The Cocoa Bliss is very cocoa-y, not chocolaty like many overly-sweetened breakfast cereals. You know, that chocolate taste that's almost savory? Still, it's not overpowering, and is balanced by sweet raisins. This stuff tastes REALLY good when topped with nut butter.
The Dates & Spices is like a little trip to a Moroccan bazaar. These are some big chunks of dates, and worthy of much chewing. If you're like me and like your chew, this granola is great. The spices are sweet but nippy.
I loved both flavors, but they are too different to pick a favorite.
Kaia's fruit leathers come in Goji Orange, Lime Ginger, Spiced Apple, and Vanilla Pear. I sampled all but the Lime Ginger.
They are all super tasty, and it's because of the blend of fruit and spice, not sugar. In fact, all that's in these little leathers are fruit and spice. They make great on the go snacks. I most liked the Spiced Apple flavor, though they were all good. Because there's no syrups added to blend everything together, you really taste the distinct fruit and spices.
Kaia's sprouted sunflower seeds come in Sweet Curry, Teriyaki, Garlic & Sea Salt, and Cocoa Molé. I got to try them all!
Wow, these flavors were interesting! They really taste like the flavors they describe. The Sweet Curry is sweet and spicy, the Teriyaki is very, uh, Teriyakiish, the Garlic & Sea Salt makes you want to suck on them, and the Cocoa Molé is the perfect blend of chocolate and nippy pepper.
I'm not a fan of Teriyaki as a flavor in general, but I thought all the others were terrific. My favorite was the Sweet Curry, followed by the Cocoa Molé, which are complex and utterly delicious. These seeds are fantastic for adding texture to anything from omelets to salad. I've put them in egg scrambles, topped salads, and sprinkled them on top of oat meal. They are super versatile and super tasty. As well, the seeds are sprouted, which is said to make digestion easier.
Kaia is a great company. They really get how to go back to basics, but to do it with style. They deliver healthy, tasty snacks that will satisfy both your sweet and savory tooth.

great review and glad you liked my dairy post today!
i love the kaia granola - but i have to say i prefer the big chunks more than the crumbly parts.
Brilliant review ~ it sounds like I'd love that granola, although the stuff is quite dangerous around me. I doubt either flavour would last long...I don't like overly sweet varieties either.

I'd never heard of it before, but it sounds tasty; thanks for the review! I agree that it's hard to find a really QUALITY granola.
hmmm buckwheat, seeds and fruit leather must mean they are Gluten Free, no?
:-) I was on fruit leathers for a bit but realized they were all made from apple concentrate- is this true for Kaia? I mean, apples are great and the fruit leathers are tasty but I wish I could get in servings of fruit with them other than from the same fruit- the Lime sounds awesome!
thanks for posting about these products!
Mmmm I've never heard of these products but they look good!
